Not only is this lure likely to take more than its share of outsized largemouth bass, but it should make a major footprint in the striper, musky, pike, walleye and saltwater market as well.
Optimum CEO Matt Paino and his father Tony, recently took the big Double Diamond on a two-day offshore trip, and after a few hours of fishing other anglers on the boat were pleading for a few of their prototypes as they outfished similar baits several times over.
Tony credited their success to the lure’s distinct vibration. “It has a tremendous tail-kicking action that sets it apart from the competition,” he said. “We’re using an 11/0 hook in it and what’s really amazing is that you can use either a weighted or an unweighted hook and it will still swim right and track true at any speed and still have the great body roll. You can’t say that about most swimbaits.”
While the larger Double Diamond may look like its baby brothers on steroids and maintains much of the originals’ signature action, its creation wasn’t just a matter of increasing the mold size proportionately. “In order to get the bait to work at all speeds, we had to go through dozens of prototypes and revisions,” Paino said. The end result is a bait that that looks like its predecessor from a distance, but upon further examination it is evident that it is in many ways a totally new lure.
Elite Series pros Fred Roumbanis and Bill Lowen have been effusive in their praise of the smaller Double Diamonds as trailers on swim jigs, but with trips to big bass factories like Amistad, Guntersville and Kentucky Lake on their schedules, they wanted that same action in a larger, stand-alone lure. This lure can be rigged weedless, on a jighead or with an exposed hook, as conditions dictate.
“That vibration is just incredible,” Lowen said. “We needed a bigger model to produce even bigger bass and I think the guys at Optimum have this one right.”
Optimum will release this larger Double Diamond in 30 colors, including the new Ghost Shad. While some of them are aimed at specific situations, most will serve double-duty in both fresh and saltwater.
The twin pack of 7” Double Diamond will retail for $6.99.
ABOUT OPTIMUM BAIT COMPANY: Optimum Bait Company has been the leader in swimbait design since 1996. Optimum was the first company to release a swimbait with an internal weight in the head, but that is only one of their many innovations. Using CAD machinery, the company has branched out not only within the swimbait market, but also into other genres – one such development was Furbit the Frog and the Poppin’ Furbit, which were chosen as the best new soft lure by the American Sportfishing Association at ICAST in 2006. While Optimum is based in Southern California, where swimbaits got their start, the lures have gained a strong foothold throughout the US as well as in overseas markets.
