This past Saturday April 3rd Crappie USA held a qualifying event on the Washington/Ferguson Lakes Near Greenville, Mississippi where anglers braved adverse weather conditions for a chance to place in the money in this event. These anglers from several different states were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela's Crappie USA Classic to be held this Fall on the Pickwick/Wilson Lakes in Alabama October 27-30, 2010.
Semi-Pro Division Results
Taking first place was the 3 person team of Steve Ferguson of Puryear, Tennessee and Joey/Levi Briggs of Dexter, Kentucky with a total weight of 11.12 pound and earning $1,000.00. Steve, Joey and Levi were fishing Lake Washington using Southern Pro purple/chartreuse, black/chartreuse and orange/chartreuse umbrella jigs on B'n'M Poles in 7-8 feet of water. The team caught over 75 fish throughout the day targeting stumps on a single break line. Steve, Joey and Levi also captured big fish of the day with a 2.15 pound crappie which netted them an additional $50.00.
Second place went to the Princeton, New Jersey team of Tommy and Jared Roper with a weight of 11.06 pounds and earning $600.00. Tommy and Jared were fishing 5 feet of water on Lake Washington using black/green Southern Pro jigs on orange jigheads tipped with live bait in murky water around cattails. The fish they were catching were suspended less than a foot under the surface. Tommy and Jared had spotted these suspended fish moving, then homed in on them to take second place.
In third place was the Conway, Arkansas team of Jason and Jim Westerberg with a weight of 8.69 pounds and earning $400 plus an additional $250.00 in the Ranger Cup Awards. Jason and Jim caught 45 fish mostly males in 2 feet of water on Lake Washington using Southern Pro lime/chartreuse glow and live bait.
The Mayfield, Kentucky team of Michael and Aaron Bowland took fourth place with a weight of 8.63 pounds fishing Lake Washington in 3.5-4 feet of water. The team was using Southern Pro blue/chartreuse and black/chartreuse Lil Hustler jigs fishing flats to capture over 75 fish.
Fifth place went to the lone angler, Warren Cotton of Memphis, Tennessee with a total weight of 7.36 pounds fishing grass flats on Lake Washington with his fish suspended 5 feet deep in 7 feet of water catching 20 fish for the day.
Amateur Division Results
First place in the amateur division was Philip Coker of Dyersburg, Tennessee and Ricky McWilliams of Halls, Tennessee with a total weight of 10.36 pounds and earning $700.00. Philip and Ricky were fishing Lake Washington in 6 feet of water along an area with a 1 foot drop off using black/chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows. The team caught over 50 fish for the day including a 1.77 pound crappie giving them an additional $20.00.
Second place went to Helen and Eddie Meeks of Crosset, Arkansas with a weight of 6.52 pounds and earning $300.00 which they donated to the Crappie USA Kids scholarship fund. Helen and Eddie were fishing shallow water, 2 feet or less, using Southern Pro black/chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows. The team caught over 37 fish for the day. Without the generosity of fine folks such as Helen and Eddie there would be no Crappie USA Kids Scholarship Fund. Over the years thanks to the support of our anglers Crappie USA has been able to give more than $270,000.00 to these deserving youth to advance their education and make the world a better place for tomorrow.

Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo
In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$2,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela's Crappie USA Classic.
Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $270,000.00 to the "Crappie Kids" Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA "Kids Fishing Rodeos".
