Kenneth McMellon and James Roberts Win Crappie USA Event at Wright-Patman Lake

March 13th Crappie USA held a qualifying event at the North Shore Park on Wright-Patman Lake near Texarkana, Texas where conditions were some of the worse ever seen on this body of water. Many anglers had spent nearly a week prefishing only to come in empty handed at the end of the day. These anglers were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela's Crappie USA Classic to be held next Fall.

Semi-Pro Division Results

Taking first place was the Redwater Texas team of Kenneth McMellon and James Roberts with a total weight of 6.26 pounds and earning $2,000.00. Kenneth and James were fishing the Kelly Creek area working the main point in 14-15 feet of water with their fish holding in 7-12 feet deep. The team had 3 good fish by 7:30 and picking up their fourth and final fish of the day at 2:50 with only 10 minutes left in the tournament. The team was using black/chartreuse jigs and minnows under slip bobbers.

Amateur Division Results

In first place in the amateur division was the Texarkana team of Donald Trumble and James Terry with a weight of 7.83 pounds and earning $1,000.00. Donald and James were fishing by the water tower at Atlanta State Park using jigs and minnows and a double hook minnow rig in 20-23 feet of water working the brush on bottom. The team only caught 5 fish throughout their day of fishing.

Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo

In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$2,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela's Crappie USA Classic.

Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $270,000.00 to the "Crappie Kids" Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA "Kids Fishing Rodeos".
