Dooly and Barthol Win Crappie USA at Lake Fork

February 27th Crappie USA held a qualifying event at the Lake Fork Marina on Lake Fork near Sulphur Springs, Texas. Anglers from 7 different states were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela's Crappie USA Classic to be held next Fall.

Competitors were also competing for an extra $2000.00 in the "One Pole Division" sponsored by Southern Pro Lures and B'n'M Poles were Fred Dooly and Dwaine Barthol of Hughes Springs, Texas.

Semi-Pro Division Results

Taking first place was the team of Fred Dooly and Dwaine Barthol of Hughes Springs, Texas with a total weight of 7.22 pounds and earning $3000.00. Fred and Dwaine were fishing with one B'n'M Pole all day under the 515 bridge with their fish hanging on the down current side of the pier. The team caught all their fish on a white/blue 2 inch Southern Pro Umbrella tube jig with attractant scent. The team caught a total of 11 fish that day in 15 feet of water. The team won $1000.00 for first place in the Semi-pro Division along with the $2000.00 bonus from B'n'M Poles and Southern Pro in the "One Pole Division" win.

Second place went to the team of Ronald Weathers of Essex, Missouri and Gerald Williams of Dexter, Missouri with a weight of 3.7 pounds and earning $500.00. Ronald and Gerald were fishing the 515 bridge using homemade gray/black hair jigs catching their fish 20 feet deep in 25 feet of water. Their fish were holding on bridge piers, only catching 5 fish during the day of competition.

In third place was the team of Dennis North of Waskom, Texas and Dale Beauchamp of Greenville, Texas with a weight of 1.12 pounds. Dennis and Dale were fishing the 515 bridge in 20 feet of water using peach/green hair jigs catching only 1 fish throughout the day.

Amateur Division Results

In first place in the amateur division was the Sulphur Springs, Texas team of La Royce McDaniel and Gary T. Hancock weighing in a total of 8.02 pounds and earning $1,000.00. La Royce and Gary were fishing under the 515 bridge using blue/gray jigs tipped with minnows and cinnamon/blue jigs tipped with minnows in 26 feet of water catching their fish 4 feet off the bottom. The team caught 35 fish throughout the day of competition.

Second place went to Dean Hewett of Terrell, Texas and Slade Dougherty of Cleburne, Texas with a weight of 6.35 pounds and earning $500.00. Dean and Slade were using one pole vertical jigging and pitching under the 515 bridge . The team was using chartreuses/pink hair jigs catching 28 fish today in 25-28 feet of water.

Taking third place was the team of Jeff Schwieterman of Parker, Texas and James Rains of Rockwall, Texas with a weight of 3.91 pound. Jeff and James were fishing vertically in 22 feet of water on live bait fishing in Beech Creek where they caught only 3 fish throughout the day.

Big Fish Award

Taking big fish of the event was the Sulphur Springs, Texas team of La Royce McDaniel and Gary T. Hancock weighing in a 2.14 pound crappie netting the team $140.00 dollars. Second place in the big fish contest was the team of Jeff Schwieterman of Parker, Texas and James Rains of Rockwall, Texas with a 1.90 pound crappie earning them $60.00.
Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo

In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$2,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela's Crappie USA Classic.

Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $270,000.00 to the "Crappie Kids" Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA "Kids Fishing Rodeos".
