Over $100,000 in Prizes Given Out At 2010 Cabela's Crappie USA Classic



Crappie USA held the 2010 Cabela's Crappie USA Classic at Sheffield, Alabama where nearly 300 anglers from 19 different states competed for over $100,000.00 in cash and prizes.

"We appreciate all our members who traveled to Sheffield AL this week for the Cabela's Crappie USA Classic and all those who helped to make this one of our best Classic events ever", said Crappie USA CEO Darrell Van Vactor. "We want to wish a very special thanks to Susann Hamlin with the Colbert County Tourism, Rick and the crew from the Sheffield Parks and Recreation, Sheffield City Commission, Mayor Ian Sanford and the staff at the Emerald River Inn for making this one of the largest and best Cabela's Crappie USA Classics ever."

Semi-Pro Division Results

Taking first place was the well known team of Ronnie Capps and Steve Coleman of Tiptonville, Tennessee weighing in a 2-day total of 25.22 pounds and earning nearly $40,000.00 in cash and prizes. Ronnie and Steve were using lime/chartreuse Southern Pro Glow Jigs fishing in 19-26 feet of water with their fish holding tight to old stumps and down to 36 feet in built structures in areas from Bear Creek to the Pickwick dam. The black and white crappie were holding together catching over 170 keepers in the 2-day event using B'n'M Poles.

Second place went to the Memphis, Tennessee team of Warren Cotton and Thomas Hill weighing in a 2-day total of 23.94 pounds and earning $5,000.00. Warren and Thomas were fishing from Yellow Creek to Bear Creek in 25 feet of water using a wind sock when the winds got up. The team was using straight Mustad hooks and minnows on B'n'M Poles catching over 35 keepers in the 2-day event. There is a 9-inch limit on this body of water.

In third place was the Hickory, North Carolina team of Randy Pope and Steven Deitz weighing in 23.41 pounds and earning $2,000.00. Randy and Steven were fishing Wilson Lake , shooting docks in up to 60 feet of water with the bigger fish under the deeper docks. The team was using white/chartreuse Lindy Dancing Jigs to catch over 90 fish in the 2-days of competition. The team also captured big fish of the 2-day event giving them an additional $1,000.00.

Steve Ferguson of Puryear, Tennessee and Joey and Levi Briggs of Dexter, Kentucky took fourth place with a weight of 20.7 pounds and earning $1,500.00. The 3-person team of Steve, Joey and Levi were using Southern Pro green/chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows fishing creek breaks on heavy structure tight lining with their fish holding tight to cover and catching over 50 fish for the weekend.

Fifth place went to the very familiar Carmi, Illinois team of Henry and Jo Haley weighing in an even 20 pounds and earning $1,000.00. Henry and Jo were fishing from the Bear Creek area to the dam slow trolling structure on the edge of creek banks with Southern Pro orange glow and red glow jigs catching over 60 fish for the weekend.

Amateur Division Results

First place in the amateur division was the Gaylesville, Alabama team of Adam Mobbs and Carlton Teague with a 2-day total weight of 20.48 pounds and earning a new Ranger boat rig valued at nearly $25,000.00. Adam and Carlton were fishing Pickwick in 20-26 feet of water slow trolling lime/chartreuse Southern Pro tubes tipped with minnows with their fish holding tight to cover early and late in the day and the fish suspended during mid day. The team caught 35 keepers Friday and 45 keepers on Saturday using Driftmaster products.

Second place went to the team of Matthew Tosh of Rutherford, Tennessee and William Johnson of Milan, Tennessee with a weight of 19.24 pounds and earning $3,000.00. Matthew and William were fishing from the Pickwick dam to the Bear Creek area on the main lake in 12-18 feet of water using black/chartreuse Southern Pro lures tipped with minnows catching over 50 keepers in the 2 days of the event.

Taking third place was Brian Arnett of Kevil, Kentucky and Marc Shoulta of Symsonia, Kentucky weighing in 18.89 pounds and earning $1,500.00. Brian and Marc were fishing Bear Creek on Pickwick Lake 10 feet deep using red/chartreuse jigs tipped with crappie nibbles and catching over 50 fish in the 2-days of the event.

In fourth was the team of Wade Hendren of Ripley, Tennessee and Roy Logan of Troy, Tennessee with a weight of 18.31 pounds and earning $1,000.00. The team was not available for the interviews.

Fifth place went to the team of John and Matt Feagin of Mayfield, Kentucky weighing in a 2-day total of 18.05 pounds and earning $800.00. John and Matt were using blue/chartreuse Southern Pro jigs tipped with minnows on 6 B'n'M Poles in Bear Creek 19-24 feet deep.

Big Fish Award

Taking big fish of the event was the Hickory, North Carolina team of Randy Pope and Steven Deitz with a 2.41 pounds crappie earning the team an additional $1,000.00.

Awards for 2010 classic

* 1st place Semi Pro team, Ronnie Capps and Steve Coleman received a Ranger Boat Rig as described on press release valued at over $35,000.00 plus $2,000.00 cash. Bonus of $1,500.00 from Southern Pro, $500.00 Cabela's Gift Card bonus from POP Culbertson award, $500.00 bonus from Ranger Cup Awards.
* Pop Culberson bonus in Amateur Division of $250.00 gift card to Danny and Beth Williamson of Camilla Georgia and $250.00 gift card to Kevin Randall and John Hendrix teams were tied for big fish in their division. Semi Pro team of Randy Pope and Steven Dietz also won $500.00 gift card.
* Top Male/Female awards of $500.00 cash each to the Semi Pro team of Henry and Jo Haley and Amateur team of Dennis and Tammy Waters.
* Top adult /youth team awards of a $500.00 saving bond in each division sponsored by Ron Gooding went to John and Matt Feagin in Amateur division and Rod and Braxton Wall in Semi Pro Division.
* Host Lodging award to the team who was first out of the money if staying in Host Hotel of a $500.00 Cabela's Gift card went to Tom Nemrick and Robert Williamson.
* National points champions were Steve Ferguson, Joey and Levi Briggs receiving a $2000.00 gift certificate from Cabela's.

Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo

In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of six-$2,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela's Crappie USA Classic. The winners will be announced in the next few days on the Crappie USA Website.

Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $302,000.00 to the "Crappie Kids" Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA "Kids Fishing Rodeos".
