The largest fishing competition in Canada concluded today in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield after two days of challenging conditions on Lake St-Francis. The best professional anglers from Eastern Canada, including some big names such as Bob Izumi who has his fishing show on CTV were of the competition.
The 2010 Berkley B1 Canadian Open Bass champions are Jacques and Stéphane Chopin of Île-Perrot and Saint-Lazare, Québec, respectively. They have been fishing competitively as a team for 7 years. Yesterday, they registered the second best weight for their daily quota of 5 fish (24.35 lbs). They recorded a total combined weight of 42.45 pounds for both days. They have also won the "lunker" prize with a 6.43 pounds gargantuan bass.
"We are good anglers, but not as much as the big names who were competing this weekend. If we can do it, that means anybody can do it," said Jacques Chopin with humility.
This weekend's most skilled anglers shared prizes valued at a total of $120,000. The winning team brings home two 2011 Evinrude E-TEC 250HO outboard motors valued at over $60,000.
This championship was a true test of everyone's skills. The murky waters continued to make the fishing conditions challenging for all anglers today. The week's heavy showers changed the opacity of the water in various areas of the lake which caused the fish to move to unpredictable locations.
As part of the many steps taken to minimize the impact on the environment, the Berkley B1 organizers are very proud to announce a survival rate of 100% for all fish caught this weekend. The Shimano Water Weigh-In System and Live Release boats ensured the safe return of every bass caught in their natural environment. Each of the sophisticated fishing boats in the competition were also equipped with livewells that kept in healthy condition the 5 fish that teams were allowed to keep on their boat until weigh-in.
