Rich Przybyl of Carlise, Pennsylvania, had the right touch to win the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series, operated by American Bass Anglers, New York West Division 22 tournament, held August 7, 2010, on Onondaga Lake.
Fishing out of Onondaga Lake State Park in Syracuse, Przybyl found a honey hole on the southwest corner of the 3,000-acre lake in practice and hit it hard, but looked for soft bites. He won the Boater Division with five bass weighing 17.11 pounds. Catching about 12 keepers with no short fish, he anchored his bag with one 4.17-pounder, catching most of his fish by flipping a blue sapphire brush hog on a 1/2-ounce sinker in five to eight feet of water.
"I fished this lake for the first time Thursday in practice and stumbled upon a place," Przybyl said. "The fish were really hitting soft, so we had to pay attention. We had to watch the line for subtle movements. Every now and then, I threw a spinnerbait between the clumps of grass, but I caught most of my fish on the brush hog. I caught my first fish on my second flip and it weighed more than 4 pounds. I had my limit by 9:20 a.m. From noon until 2 p.m., I really hit them and upgraded all the bass I caught earlier."
In second for the 34 boaters, Thomas Shafer of Pine City landed a five-bass tournament limit weighing 16.61 pounds with one 4.59-pounder. Helped by a 4.18-pound kicker, W Thomas Hall of Olean placed third with five bass going 12.11 pounds.
Bill Lortz of Rochester caught three keepers for 10.20 pounds including one 4.32-pounder. Rounding out the top five boaters, Mark Holly of Olean landed five bass for 9.86 pounds. Patrick Flanagan of Marietta took tournament lunker honors with a 4.71-pound sowbelly.
In the Co-Angler Division, Craig Alderman of Apalachin won with three bass going 7.58 pounds, followed by John Ciavaglia of Pittsford with three bass for 7.22 pounds, including a 3.11-pounder. Brian Depto of Kane, Pa., took third with three bass at 6.10 pounds.
Scott Lafaver of Elbridge finished fourth with a three-bass division limit going 5.80 pounds, trailed by Gary Olson of Lakewood with three bass and 5.38 pounds. Jason Grey of Buffalo took sixth place with 5.31 pounds, but anchored his two-bass bag with a 3.61-pounder to take the division lunker title.
