Nick Prvonozac won his second event in as many months by taking the Boater Division title during the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series, operated by American Bass Anglers, Ohio Division 20 tournament, held July 31, 2010, out of Mosquito Lake State Park in Cortland.
Calling the 7,850-acre impoundment his home lake, the 38-year-old Warren angler landed a five-bass stringer weighing 15.37 pounds, but a penalty knocked him back to 14.87 pounds. However, he anchored his stringer with a 4.72-pound lunker that took tournament big bass honors.
"I live five miles from this lake and fish a lot of team events, so I'm here often," Prvonozac explained. "I scrambled all day. I fished some offshore areas and caught a few little ones. Then, I hit some weed beds and caught a 3-pounder. I also fished some stumps and a few other areas. I threw everything but the kitchen sink at them. The majority of my bigger fish came on spinnerbaits. The big one hit a Booyah Vibra-Flex spinnerbait."
In June, Prvonozac won an ABA event on Chautauqua Lake in New York. In that event, he landed five bass weighing 19.15 pounds to earn $2,456.
Aaron Stumpf, 32, of Galena nearly dethroned Prvonozac. He landed five bass weighing 14.91 pounds, enough to take the win after Prvonozac suffered his penalty. Unfortunately for Stumpf, though, he also drew a half-pound penalty to finish with 14.41 pounds. Still, he collected $1,150.
"It's going to be a long drive back home," Stumpf said. "I got on a topwater bite with buzzbaits, but that died early in the morning. Then, I started throwing Sammies and stuck with the topwaters. I never pulled a bait under the water all day and caught about 60 keepers."
In third, Christopher Clemence, 30, of Maple Heights brought in a five-bass tournament limit going 12.67 pounds with a 4-pound kicker. He also took and a bonus as the highest Triton Gold finisher.
"I fish a lot of tournaments out here," Clemence said. "I found the fish last weekend in another tournament. I used frogs and Sammy topwaters, taking advantage of the cloud cover, and culled about eight times."
Chris Malone of Ironton placed fourth in the 48-boat event with five bass at 11.78 pounds. Ron Nutter, Jr. of Newark, Ohio, also landed a five-bass bag, but took fifth with 10.05 pounds.
In the Co-Angler Division, Josh Smith, 30, of Germantown won with three bass going 8.89 pounds. He anchored his bag with a 3.67-pounder, earning $1,150.
"This was the first time I've ever been on this lake," Smith said. "My partner started out fishing topwaters. I caught my fish on Texas-rigged Berkley Power Baits all day. I used several different dark colors fished in front of the weed lines."
Just missing the victory, Dave Davenport of Milford landed a three-bass division limit weighing 8.92 pounds with a 3.23-pound kicker, but lost a half-pound to a penalty. He settled for second among the co-anglers with an official tally of 8.42 pounds.
Dennis Murphy of Berea landed in third with three bass going 7.73 pounds, followed by Joseph Sibley of Strasburg with 7.59 pounds. Sibley actually landed three bass weighing 8.09 pounds and could have taken third without the penalty.
James Ficociello, Jr. of Valley City brought in three keepers for 6.90 pounds with one going 3.37 pounds to finish fifth. Aaron Counts of Columbus took sixth with three bass at 6.79 pounds, but took division lunker honors with a 4.29-pounder.
