Jerry Strain loaded his pockets during the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series, operated by American Bass Anglers, Tennessee Central Division 3 championship tournament, held Aug. 28-29, 2010, on Old Hickory Lake.
Running out of Bulls Creek in Gallatin, Strain of Old Hickory, TN, landed six bass weighing 19.20 pounds. Catching only bass weighing 1.91 pounds on the first day, he came back with the largest sack of the tournament on Day 2. He anchored his five-bass, 17.29-pound Day 2 bag with a 4.57-pound tournament lunker. For the Boater Division win, Strain also collected a hefty bonus as the Triton Gold winner and additional cash from MotorGuide and Mercury outboards($5,000).
"On the first day, I chased the shad balls and just couldn't make it work," Strain said. "On the second day, I caught just about all of my fish in the first 30 minutes. I fished Carolina-rigged brush hogs in six to 12 feet of water on the main river. I fished a green pumpkin brush hog, but I don't think color made that much difference."
Mike Del Visco of Greer, SC, took second on the 22,000-acre lake. He landed two five-bass daily limits for a total of 18.63 pounds. He landed 9.55 pounds on the first day and followed up with 9.08 pounds the second day to earn $1,434.
"I fished in two feet of water all week," Del Visco said. "I took a white spinnerbait and covered a lot of water. I also caught some on a brush hog."
In third for the 36 boaters, James Hutcheson of Kingston, TN, landed seven bass going 17.68 pounds with a 4.32-pound kicker. He landed 9.77 pounds on the first day and 7.91 pounds the second day to win $955.50.
"I did the same thing both days," Hutcheson said. "I caught all my fish shallow in the river. I caught them quick and then they just quit. I mostly threw spinnerbaits and a Rat-L-Trap. I had good fish on twice, but lost them and that hurt me."
Chad Hall of Dora, Ala., landed in fourth with nine bass going 16.94 pounds. He caught 9.10 pounds on Day 1 with 7.84 pounds the second day. In fifth, Brandon Eddings of LaVergne, TN, caught seven bass for 16.40 pounds with one 3.59-pound kicker.
In the Co-Angler Division, David De Jesus of Ashland City, TN, caught two three-bass daily division limits weighing 10.77 pounds. He landed 5.19 pounds the first day and 5.58 pounds the second day to pocket $1,434.
"On Day 1 we fished near the dam and caught them on medium-running foxy shad crankbaits and Texas-rigged brush hogs," De Jesus said. "On Day 2, we fished shallow banks with spinnerbaits."
Placing second for the non-boaters, Rod James of Soddy Daisy, TN, brought in four bass weighing 10.42 pounds. He led the first day with an 8.20-pound bag anchored by a 4.74-pounder that took division big bass honors. He caught one bass weighing 2.22 pounds the second day. James earned $717 with a $135 bonus for the lunker.
"I caught the big one on the first day at about 12:30 p.m.," James said. "It hit an Old Monster in about three feet of water at the end of a log. On the second day, I caught about 20 fish doing the same thing."
Jim Childers of Tullahoma, TN, took third with five bass going 9.52 pounds, helped by a 3.11-pound kicker. He landed 6.27 pounds on the first day and followed with 3.25 pounds to win $478.50.
"I used a little bit of everything," Childers said. "I fished spinnerbaits and cranking shallow on the first day and Texas rigs and jigs deeper on the second day. I had several fish get off."
Robert Taylor of Auburn, Ala., landed in fourth with four bass going 8.79 pounds including one 2.64-pounder. In fifth for the non-boaters, Jeff Stevenson of Decherd, TN, landed four bass weighing 7.50 pounds with one 2.18-pounder.
