Henry Fristik Wins BASS Weekend Series at Lake Champlain

Henry Fristik "just went fishing," but caught the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series, operated by American Bass Anglers, New York East Division 23 tournament title.

The Chester, Mass., angler boated 30 keepers, bringing five weighing 19.10 pounds to the scales to win the Boater Division in the event held Aug. 14, 2010, out of Fort Ticonderoga town ramp on Lake Champlain. He anchored his bag with a 4.86-pounder to collect $2,502.

"I didn't get a chance to practice, but this is my home lake so I knew what I wanted to do," Fristik said. "I just went fishing. I went out to find fish and I did. I caught most of my fish in 10 feet of water with a jig, a creature bait or a chatter bait. Color really didn't matter. Once I found them, they ate it."

Running and gunning in the 440-square-mile lake separating New York from Vermont, Michael Marini of Slingerlands, N.Y., found the division lunker, a 5.72-pounder. The ABA rookie landed a five-bass tournament limit weighing 18.76 pounds. In total, he caught about 15 bass.

"I wasn't on big schools of fish," Marini said. "I hit about a dozen spots and went back to them a couple times running and gunning and fishing fast. I fished topwaters in the morning and then switched to worms. I fished in about four to eight feet of water."

Joey Rodrigues of Brookfield, Conn., landed in third with five bass going 17.92 pounds. He landed 18 fish with one weighing 4.30 pounds.

"I found my fish on Thursday by flipping a Sweet Beaver," Rodrigues said. "I had a back-up plan of fishing a 1/2-ounce casting jig on rocks and docks. Both techniques worked about equally well."

Tom Tarasoff of Kingston, Ontario, finished fourth among the 54 boaters. The Canadian angler landed five bass weighing 17.97 pounds, enough for third place, but a penalty dropped him back to 17.47 pounds. He anchored his stringer with a 5.32 pounder.

John Dellacamera of North Branford, Conn., and Craig Neilson of Ontario, Canada, tied for fifth place. Each caught five bass weighing 16.69 pounds. Dellacamera landed one going 4.99 pounds.

In the Co-Angler Division, Matthew Jones of Delmar, N.Y. landed three bass going 10.40 pounds with a 3.88-pound kicker to win. John Kelley, Jr. of Old Forge, Pa., followed with a three-bass division limit at 10.20 pounds including a 5.37-pounder.

Carl Alexander of East Claredon, Vt., landed three bass for 9.97 pounds with one 5.97-pounder, followed by Ron Terlop of Cleveland, Ohio, with a three-bass bag weighing 9.64 pounds. Daniel Hatstat of Danbury, Ct., placed fifth with three bass at 9.61 pounds. Vincent Murphy of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., won the tournament lunker honors with a 6.66-pounder.
