Chad Brauer's 5 Baits for Successful Fall Bass Fishing

The past few weeks of summer heat have made me excited for the temperatures of fall and the cooler water that make the bass more active. August and September are usually the most difficult times to catch bass, but when the temperatures start to cool in the fall months, the bass start to move to shallower waters and are easier to catch.

While the bass fishing is tough, my advice is to use the last two months of summer to prepare for the upcoming influx of bass with five baits that are sure bets for fall fishing.

1. Square Billed Crankbaits – I like to throw Strike King Series 4S and Series 1. The 4S is a bit bigger, while the Series 1 looks just like the young baitfish the bass are feeding on during the fall. Throw these around any cover that bass can suspend around – especially docks.

2. Buzzbait – Topwater baits are great during the fall, but my favorite is the buzzbait. The quick moving action draws a lot of reaction bites, and it works great around vegetation.

3. Frogs – Matted vegetation can produce some of the best bass fishing of the year, and there’s nothing more exciting to catch them than with a frog. The toughest thing about this bait is setting the hook too early and missing the explosion of bass coming through the grass!

4. White Jigs – These are perfect for swimming around and looking like a wounded baitfish. I like this pattern when the fishing gets a bit slow or if there is a lot of fishing pressure on the lake.

5. Spinnerbaits – Works great when the baitfish have moved into the shallow water. I love to burn them just below the surface of the water and then stop them next to a piece of cover. These also work great for smallmouth bass in the north.

Preparation is the key to success while fishing, so get these baits ready and head out when the weather gets cool – you won’t be disappointed!

Good Luck,
Chad Brauer
