Steve DeBord concentrated on docks to win the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series, operated by American Bass Anglers, South Carolina Division 9 tournament, held June 26, 2010, on Lake Wateree near Camden.
Launching out of Clearwater Cove, DeBord landed five bass weighing 16.87 pounds, but a half-pound penalty knocked him back to 16.37 pounds, still enough to win the Boater Division. Catching one 4.63-pounder, the Martinez, Ga., angler fished the upper end of the 13,250-acre lake.
"I was flipping a jig around docks in the upper part of the lake," DeBord explained. "I had a limit by 10:30 a.m. and never caught a fish after noon."
In second for the boaters, Steve Phillips of Lugoff landed a five-bass tournament limit weighing 15.45 pounds to collect $930. He spent the day cranking in the mid-lake area.
Brett Collins of Ridgeway landed five bass for 13.59 pounds with a 4.79-pound kicker to take third. He earned $620.
"I caught my fish on a Shooter jig, a Spro frog and floating worms," Collins remarked. "I had a limit by about 1 p.m."
Wayne King of Sumter landed four bass for 10.56 pounds, but a penalty put him back to 10.06 pounds with one 4.65-pounder. Ryan McMurtury of Abbeville followed in fifth with five bass for 8.89 pounds after a half-pound penalty. John Allen of Concord, N.C., only landed one bass, but took lunker honors with his 5.18-pounder.
"I was flipping grass with a Big Bite Baits Fighting Frog creature bait at 9 a.m. when the big one hit," Allen explained. "I went through about two bags of frogs and had a lot of bites. I just didn't execute very well."
For the Co-Angler Division, Scott Stallings of Cannapolis, N.C., won it all. He landed two bass weighing 6.89 pounds for the victory. One
