James Kane put together the winning pattern during the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series, operated by American Bass Anglers, New York East Division 23 tournament, held June 26, 2010, on the St Lawrence River out of Massena.
On a cool, overcast and breezy day with intermittent rain, Kane, 68, of Hadley Mass., experimented with several baits and locations until he determined the winning combination. He won the Boater Division with five bass going 18.06 pounds, including a 4.12-pound kicker.
"I started experimenting in deep water and then went shallow," Kane advised. "The fish were in shallow water around chunk rock about three to four inches in diameter. Once I found out where they were, I looked at the map and ran around fishing areas that looked like that. I caught my two biggest fish on crankbaits and lost two good fish. I caught the rest on a tube. I really had a good time and wanted to thank the Massena Chamber for hosting such a great event."
In second for the boaters, Tom Tarasoff of Kingston, Ontario, landed five bass weighing 17.59 pounds with one going 4.01 pounds. Anchoring his five-bass bag with a 4.83-pound tournament lunker, Stephen Feigel of West Milford, N.J., finished third with 17.36 pounds. Charles Sim of Ottawa, Ontario, landed a five-bass tournament limit for 16.76 pounds, followed by Brad Paradis of Ogdensburg, N.Y. with five bass at 16.50 pounds with one 4.41-pounder.
For the Co-Anglers, James Perez, Jr., of Rensselaer, N.Y. brought in three keepers for 10.66 pounds. Catching about 15 bass, he landed one 3.51-pounder. He caught most of his fish on a 4.5-inch black with blue fleck worm fished on the bottom.
"We fished different baits including drop shots, tubes, chatter baits and Rat-L-Traps," Perez said. "I caught a lot of fish on a drop-shot. The key was just keeping it on the bottom of as long as possible."
Frank Appaluccio of Sparta, N.J., placed second with a three-bass division limit anchored by a 3.99-pounder for a total of 10.11 pounds. George King of Highland Falls, N.Y., took third with three bass for 9.34 pounds, followed by Ron Terlop of Cleveland, Ohio, with three bass at 9.25 pounds including one 3.37-pounder.
Robin Reome of Malone, N.Y., finished fifth with three bass for 9.23 pounds. Mike Leger of Cornwall, Ontario, placed sixth with three bass going 8.87 pounds, but took division big bass honors with a 4.18-pounder.
