Rodney Clawson Wins Bassmaster Weekend Series at Kentucky/Barkley Lakes

Running south in Kentucky Lake, Rodney Clawson found the right spot to win the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series, operated by American Bass Anglers, Kentucky Division 15 tournament, held June 19, 2010, out of Lake Barkley Marina in Cadiz.

Anglers could fish the 160,300-acre Kentucky Lake or 57,900-acre Lake Barkley. With lots of room to run in the 84-mile long Kentucky Lake, Clawson of Old Hickory, Tenn., found a ledge that produced five bass going 21.33 pounds with a 5.14-pound kicker. The long run paid off with a $2,973 check for winning the Boater Division. Clawson also pocketed bonuses as the top Triton Boats and Toyota Tundra finishers.

"All the fish that I weighed came off one stop," Clawson said. "I caught a 4-pounder on the first cast. I was throwing a blue-back Bomber crankbait on a ledge in the mouth of a creek. It was about eight feet deep on top and dropped to about 13 feet with some shell on it."

In second for the 72 boaters, Marty Sisk of Evansville, Ind., landed a five-bass limit weighing 20.93 pounds, but three died, costing him 1.5 pounds in penalties. He fished with 19.43 pounds, including one 4.39-pounder to collect $1,486.

"We tried our best to keep those fish alive and even came in early," Sisk lamented. "I caught my fish on a 3/4-ounce jig and a Strike King crankbait in 15 to 20 feet of water. Early, I used a chartreuse crankbait and then changed to Texas shad. I caught two fish off one spot and the rest off other spots. By 9 a.m., I had about everything I needed."

Ben Johnson of Paducah, Ky., took third with a five-bass bag holding 18.59 pounds to take home $991. A morning storm affected his early fishing, but it subsided enough for him to catch his bass on a big worm.

"I've been on fish strong all week," Johnson explained. "On the north end of Kentucky Lake, we had really rough weather for about three hours. Then, it finally calmed down and I went back on a hump in a little bay."

Kris Effinger of Evansville, Ind., landed in fourth for the boaters with five bass going 17.82 pounds, including one at 5.53 pounds. Mark Wardlaw of Buchanan, Tenn., landed a five-bass tournament limit anchored by a 4.25-pounder for 17.39 pounds and fifth place. Earl Skip Bennett of Mount Vernon, Ill., only landed two bass, but one 5.82-pounder set the tournament lunker standard.

In the Co-Angler Division, Jayme Grundy of Greenville, Ky., caught three keepers for 12.84 pounds with one 5.20-pound bucketmouth. He cashed a check for $1,486 as the division winner.

"I can't thank my boater Joe Rahuba enough," Grundy said. "We flipped shallow -- less than two feet of water. Everything bit a black and blue Sweet Beaver."

In second for the non-boaters, Jarett Strickland of Newburgh, Ind., landed a division limit of three bass going 11.91 pounds with a 4.95-pound kicker. Fishing about 15 feet of water in Lake Barkley with a 10-inch Berkley Power Worm in plum and blue fleck, he earned $743.

Kenneth Peck of Paducah, Ky., took third with three bass for 10.92 pounds including one 4.63-pounder. He won $495.

"We fished way down south and caught our fish on plum worms," he said. "We fished the main lake in 12 to 17 feet of water."

Roger Brown of Louisville, Ky., finished fourth with three bass going 10.58 pounds. He missed third because of a half-pound penalty. In fifth, Brendan Murphy of Cape Girardeau, Mo., caught 10.44 pounds with a 4.05-pound potbelly. Dan Basham of Louisville, Ky., took division lunker honors with a 5.78-pounder he caught on a black and blue jig in about two to five feet of water right after the storm ended.
