Carr & Paterson Win Crappie USA at Toledo Bend

This past Saturday March 27th Crappie USA held a qualifying event at the Cypress Bend Resort, near Many, Louisiana on Toledo Bend. These anglers were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela's Crappie USA Classic to be held this Fall on the Pickwick/Wilson Lakes in Alabama.

Semi-Pro Division Results

Taking first place was the team of Mike Carr of Many, Louisiana and Jim Paterson of Wenona, Illinois with a weight of 12.21 pounds and earning $1,000.00. Mike and Jim were fishing the murky waters of Leonette Bay in 10 feet of water. As the water temperature climbed to the mid 60's they went to the bank catching 5 of their fish in 2 feet of water using shiners. All together the team caught about 40 fish during the day of competition.

Second place went to the Huffman, Texas team of Randy Wolf and James Butz weighing in 9.5 pounds and earning $600.00. Randy and James were fishing north of the Tennehall area using black/chartreuse hand tied and Road Runner jigs in brush 3-10 feet deep catching nearly 15 fish for the day.

In third place was the Gun Barrel City, Texas team of Jay Don and Rhonda Reeve weighing in 8.17 pounds and earning $400.00. Jay and Rhonda were slow trolling the 6 mile area using minnows to troll the edges of hydrilla in 6-14 feet of water. The team caught only 7 fish for the day.

Amateur Division Results

First place in the amateur division went to the Jasper, Texas team of Andy Golden and Ty Quick with a weight of 10.19 pounds and earning $500.00. Andy and Ty were fishing brushpiles 3-10 feet deep in the 6 mile area using chartreuse and black Tripple Ripple jigs over the top of grass beds.

Second place went to Brian Simon of Eunice, Louisiana and Brandon Guidry of Rayne, Louisiana weighing in 9 pounds and earning $300.00. Brian and Brandon were fishing 5-20 feet deep in the Rice Landing area using jigs in brushpiles catching only 10 fish for the day.

Taking third place was the Hemphill, Texas team of Steve and Wesley Conn with a total weight of 8.07 pounds and earning $200.00. Steve and Wesley were fishing the mid lake area over brushpiles in 8-10 feet of water using blue and white Trumpit jigs. The team was casting, counting down then swimming the bait back to them catching 15-20 fish for the day.

Big Fish Award

Taking big fish of the event was the team of Mike Carr of Many, Louisiana and Jim Paterson of Wenona, Illinois with a 2.37 pound crappie earning them $129.50. Second place in the big fish contest was the Jasper, Texas team of Andy Golden and Ty Quick weighing in a 2.01 pound crappie and earning $55.50.
Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo

In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$2,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela's Crappie USA Classic.

Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $270,000.00 to the "Crappie Kids" Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA "Kids Fishing Rodeos".
