Mercury Marine Wins Green Award

Mercury Marine's MercMonitor ECO-Screen was named West Marine's Green Product of the Year this morning at the Miami International Boat Show.

The ECO-Screen is a SmartCraft feature that helps maximize fuel efficiency.

The award, presented by West Marine chairman and founder Randy Repass, was chosen for its eco-effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, applicability and innovation.

Mercury received a $10,000 award with the honor, which Mercury president Mark Schwabero said will go into the company's conservation fund.

"It's wonderful to be recognized for something we at Mercury really believe in," Schwabero said in accepting the award. "It really does more to save boaters money."

Repass described the ECO-Screen as applicable to new and used boats, simple to install and use, reasonably priced, and a product that can help boaters realize fuel savings of 10 to 20 percent.

Repass said 41 products were submitted for the contest, which the company plans to hold again in 2011.

"The Green Product of the Year contest was designed to help fulfill West Marine's mission to preserve and protect the marine environment," said Repass. "We hope it encourages vendors, manufacturers and inventors to develop sustainable products to help boaters enjoy boating, while minimizing their impact on our natural resources. I look forward to seeing next year's entries."
