Crappie USA held a qualifying event at the Boone Lake Overlook on Boone Lake near Kingsport. These anglers were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela's Crappie USA Classic to be held this Fall on the Pickwick/Wilson Lakes in Alabama. The weather played a big part in holding the weights down on Boone Lake with high winds and tornado's covering the Mississippi area and heading north throughout the day.
Semi-Pro Division Results
Taking first place was the team of Randy Pope and Steven Dietz of Hickory, North Carolina with a weight of 6.63 pounds and earning $1,000.00. Randy and Steven were running from dock to dock with their best area's running in 10-20 feet of water using white Lindy Fuzzy grubs and Lindy Little Nippers. The team caught over 75 fish for the day.
Second place went to Brance Hagood of Rogersville, Tennessee and Glen Hagood of Mooresburg, Tennessee weighing in 6.39 pounds and earning $600.00. Brance and Glen were fishing up the Watoga River side of the lake in 18-21 feet of water. The team was targeting the stained water areas over submerged cover on live bait and black/red jigs.
In third place was the Gilbert, South Carolina team of Joe and Janette Carter with 2.66 pounds and earning $200.00. Joe and Janette were longline trolling in 3 feet of water using orange and dreamcicle jigs.
Tommie and Jared Roper of Princeton, New Jersey took fourth place with a weight of 1.22 pounds of crappie.
Fifth place went to Rod and Braxton, Wall of Ninety Six, North Carolina with a weight of .57 pounds.
Amateur Division Results
First place in the amateur division was the Harrogate, Tennessee 3-person team of Greg Corum, Katrina Wilson and Aliissa Evans weighing in 9.74 pound and earning $500.00. The 3-person Harrogate team was tightlining minnows in 5-13 feet of water. The team fished 4 spots all day over manmade cover just above the bridge close to the airport ramp. They caught over 20 fish for the day including second big fish of the day at 1.71 pound.
Second place went to James Turner of Hiltons, Virginia and John Hobbs of Kingsport, Tennessee with a weight of 5.18 pounds and earning $300.00. James and John were fishing the Watoga River area in 6-18 feet of water using Southern Pro jigs tipped with minnows under docks and on manmade cover.
Taking third place was the Winchester, Virginia team of Ronnie Mauck and Bruce Sigurdson weighing in 5.14 pound and earning $200.00. Ronnie and Bruce were fishing on contours 5-10 feet deep using white Lindy Little Nipers in the Muddy Creek area, only catching 5 fish for the day.
In fourth was the Pikesville, Tennessee team of Kendall and Leslie Smith with 4.65 pounds. The Triggers BBQ Sauce sponsored team were fishing docks in 40 feet of water on the upper end of the lake using mostly live bait fishing 2 feet deep under the docks and only catching 8 fish for the day.
Fifth place went to the Maryville, Tennessee team of Eric and Janet Fenstemaker with 3.93 pounds of crappie. Eric and Janet were fishing the backs of creeks in the Holston River area just above the weigh in site using jigs tipped with minnows.

Big Fish Award
Taking big fish of the event was the team of Brance Hagood of Rogersville, Tennessee and Glen Hagood of Mooresburg, Tennessee with a 1.82 pound crappie earning them $77.00. Second place in the big fish contest was the Harrogate, Tennessee 3-person team of Greg Corum, Katrina Wilson and Aliissa Evans weighing in a 1.71 pound crappie and earning $33.00.
Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo
In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$2,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela's Crappie USA Classic.
Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $290,000.00 to the "Crappie Kids" Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA "Kids Fishing Rodeos".
