Crappie USA held a qualifying event at the Cutright Ramp on Indiana's Lake Monroe. These anglers were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela's Crappie USA Classic to be held this Fall on the Pickwick/Wilson Lakes in Alabama.
Semi-Pro Division Result
Taking first place was the team of Michael Walters of West Milton, Ohio and Richard Solomon of Piqua, Ohio with a total weight of 13.07 pounds and earning $1,000.00. The team was fishing in the Pine Grove area slow trolling in 5 feet of water using chartreuse/orange/chartreuse Southern Pro jigs and live bait rigs with their fish holding tight on wood. The team was also using 16 foot B'n'M Pro Staff poles, Humminbird side imager and Minn Kota trolling motor. The team caught over 70 fish for the day.
Second place went to Robert Raymer of Greenfield, Indiana and Jim Raymer of Noblesville, Indiana weighing in 10.89 pound and earning $600.00. Robert and Jim were also fishing Pine Grove area vertical jigging brush and stumps in 6-8 feet of water with black/chartreuse Southern Pro tubes on their B'n'M Sam's Super Sensitive 11 foot and 12 foot Bucks Gold Series Poles, Hummingbird Side Imager and Minn Kota Trolling motor. The team caught over 100 fish for the day.
In third place was the Anderson, Indiana team of Myron Etchison and Randy Marsh with a weight of 10.65 pounds and earning $400.00. Myron and Randy were spider rigging points in the Middlefork area in 9 feet of water with their bigger fish suspended 3 feet deep on laydowns, also 3 feet deep in 9 feet of water next to creek channels. The team was using B'n'M 14 foot poles and 3 inch shiners to catch 40 fish for the day.
Doug Laake of Ferdinand, Indiana and Ryan Rohl of Birdseye, Indiana took fourth place with a weight of 8.85 pounds.
Fifth place went to Brian Cleland of Decatur, Illinois and Duffy Cleland of Tuscola, Illinois with a total weight of 7.43 pounds.
Amateur Division Results
First place in the amateur division was the team of Tony Sherrill of North Vernon, Indiana and Fred Willis of Norman, Indiana with a weight of 10.29 pounds and earning $750.00. Tony and Fred were fishing Middlefork and Pine Grove area in 6-9 feet of water using Nothead yellow/chartreuse jigs with shiners under a slip float, allowing the bait to drop in brush where these fish were holding tight. The team was using 16 foot B'n'M Pole Ultimate catching 75 crappie for the day.
Second place went to the Bloomington, Indiana team of Joe McWhorter and William Egan weighing in 9.55 pound and earning $500.00. Joe and William were fishing Middlefork and Pine Grove area vertical jigging wood structure with Power Grubs in 5-6 feet of water. Their fish were holding tight and deep in structure. The team caught around 200 fish for the day.
Taking third place was Paul Hildreth of Muncie, Indiana and Charlie Hildreth of Easton, Indiana with 9.5 pounds and earning $300.00. Paul and Charlie were fishing the Pine Grove area vertical jigging and slow trolling in 2-7 feet of water using 2 inch purple/chartreuse Southern Pro jigs catching around 40 fish for the day.
In fourth was the team of Jeff Yeakle of Jonesboro, Indiana and Jonathan Brumley of Marion, Indiana with 9.3 pounds and earning $200.00. Jeff and Jonathan were fishing the Middlefork area vertical jigging laydowns in 5 feet of water using black/chartreuse and orange/chartreuse Southern Pro tubes. The team caught 50 fish for the day.
Fifth place went to the team of Glenn Gill and Thomas Hankins of Indianapolis, Indiana weighing in 8.34 pounds and earning $150.00. Glenn and Thomas were fishing Pine Grove slow trolling blue/chartreuse Southern Pro tubes in 5-6 feet of water. The team caught nearly 100 crappie for the day.

Big Fish Award
Taking big fish of the event was the team of Michael Walters of West Milton, Ohio and Richard Solomon of Piqua, Ohio weighing in a 2.49 pound crappie which netted them $255.50. Second place in the big fish contest was the team of Tony Sherrill of North Vernon, Indiana and Fred Willis of Norman, Indiana with a 2.35 pound crappie and earning $109.50.
Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo
In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$2,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela's Crappie USA Classic.
Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $290,000.00 to the "Crappie Kids" Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA "Kids Fishing Rodeos".
